In the summer of 1976 the water level at Redmire fell drastically, for the first time in its history, reducing the surface area to about half. With the extraordinarily high temperatures that were experienced over a long period of time, the carp at Redmire appeared on the surface from shortly after dawn till well into the night. On occasions they remained on the surface right through the night.

Fishing was hardly worthwhile, the carp being rarely interested in feeding. Most of their time was spent lying up in the weed in the uncomfortable low oxygen conditions. I spent long periods sat in various trees with binoculars. It was possible to see every scale on the fish and recognise the well-known ones immediately. Inch long leeches could easily been seen and so could the glazed eyes of a couple of the known blind fish. Almost every day I saw the famous 38 to 40lb mirror (which subsequently became Chris Yates' 51 ½-pounder), and the leather which weighs between 27 and 30lb. The lengths of these two fish are 35 ½ inches and 34 ¼ inches respectfully. I also saw the 30lb 6oz mirror which I caught in 1975, which was 32 ¾ inches long. Those were the longest carp I saw at Redmire, and I find it extremely difficult to imagine how and why one or two very much larger fish, if they still existed, could stay hidden in these adverse conditions. A 60lb carp would require at least as much oxygen as a 20lb carp.

More weight was added to this argument when in early 1977 Redmire was netted for the first time ever. Several comprehensive sweeps of the net revealed a large number of carp over 20lb, with one or two over 30lb. (author's note - this was also true in 1990 when I attended a similar netting of the pool.)

Kev Clifford again, Whilst it is extremely unlikely that the netting managed to capture every carp in the lake, it seems rather a coincidence that the same monster fish which have avoided capture on anglers' tackle for so many years, can also ........ read the rest of this great srory on carpspace.co.uk forum http://forum.carpspace.co.uk
