Went to my usual Essex lake and found the Carp spawning - thought it was going to be a good day too, sunny and warm with just the right amount of cloud cover....
I found a corner of the lake where the Carp that weren't spawning had gathered under an overhanging tree and managed five to 14lb plus a 15lb Catfish... not bad but all the bigger fish were absent apart from one I couldn't keep away from the snags and lost....
My friend Chris had a 3lb Bream from open water and the biggest fish of the day, a 15lb 10oz Catfish in the margins.... no-one else caught at all.... I don't think many people realise that when the Carp start spawning they don't all spawn at the same time.... some waters can have three different spawning periods... so there's usually some fish somewhere to catch.
Next week I'll be ringing up to ask about spawning before deciding where to go though.
