I have had a few more blanks on the bank, fishing Motorway several times (I love this water) one overnight session on Woodall’s and a 48hr blank on doctors pond. Then last month I was invited by a friend to fish with him on Oakland’s. this was my first time on Oakland’s and at first sight of my swim the only words to describe it was, sardines in a can, with anglers not 10 yard apart on one bank and only 2 fishing the far bank I asked the bailiff if a swim was free on the far bank and to my joy it was.
In front of me was a reed bed 15yards out, and beyond that it was very weedy. I found it difficult to locate a clear spot so I decided to fish a gully between me and the reeds. With two spots baited up either side of my swim and my middle rod placed tight to the reeds my traps were set for the night so I settled in.
Not being one to zip myself away from the world preferring to keep my eyes on the water I had left the wrap at home and was sleeping open plan. That night it was bitterly cold dropping to -3. I didn’t sleep well and was wide awake by 4.45am, having not having a take all night the kettle was boiled. I was drinking a hot brew while looking over the pond for a sign of a fish enjoying the early morning sun rise feeling very happy to be out on the bank. Then to my right a carp jumped clean out of the water about 50yards out. I knew it weedy in that area so I reeled my middle rod and changed the lead to 1.5oz and attached the cheeky pop rig that I had prepared the night before then cast to the spot. 20minuits later I was in and banked myself a.....
