Right rivers, a basic collection to start you off would consist of some nymphs, some bugs, some gnats and some dun patterns, colours and sizes would depend on the hatches on that river.
Stillwaters I would recommend all the above but would include a collection of buzzers also.
The aim of the game is to match the hatch, by this I mean use a fly that best imitates the flies that are on your chosen water.
Martin if you join the forum, PM me on there with your address and I will tie you up a few patterns to get you started. My user name on there is wayne and I am the administrator. Hope I can help you out.
P.S there is a very good article in the article section of the forum that will help you choose a rod & reel.
Regarding your question about hints, tips,or advice. I would advise you to join www.nitaforum.co.uk and read through the posts on there or even ask a question or two someone WILL help. To list all hints, tips,or advice on here would take a lifetime and it would be quicker for me to write a book :) . If you want to be a bit more specific with want you wish to know I will be more than happy to help you here but I would advise to have a look at that site.
Wayne.
