as for river carping i'm sure this varys from river too river, but you cant beat prebaiting, parti blend pellets and boilies would be my first choice!, rig wise i'd go for a coated braid such as kryston mantis with a size 8 korda wide gape hook and 15lb korda IQ hoolink with a boilie such as terry hearns source boilies, or other high attract ones

Carp - Floating crust (if you can find a shoal of carp in the summer sunning themselves get them competing for bread first then cast out an offering)
Chub - most people ledger or float fish but for a real big one again floating crust in the summer months.
Perch - ledgered or float-fished lobworm
I find with the Stort that it doesn't matter what tactics you use, the fish have to be in your swim! so i prefer a roving approach good luck!

I see you live in Essex and you mention the River Stort...great river i have been fishing it for ten years now!
has its ups and downs but theres some big fish in there, no one reaqlly knows how big the pike and carp grow in there but i've seen carp past the 30 mark!
