just started this discussion as i'm wanting some ideas of new places to fish but due to the time of year i wouldn't mind knowing i'm on to a winner!! i'll start off by reccomending sandbeck lake near maltby, rotherham. it's an estate lake about 3-4 acres (i think!!) and has plenty of good fish from carp to high doubles to low twenties (maybe bigger but i've never caught any) tench to around 7-8lb but my favourites are the perch which go bigger than 4.5lbs. there are also pike, decent sized bream and all the usual silver fish. i,ve had carp to 10.5lb, perch to about 2.5lb tench to around 5lb and plenty of nice bream. anyone interested and i'll sort you out with day tickets (£4.00) directions & tactics/baits.

r8 pete, i'll just let you know i'm gona delete that pike vid as i didn't realise it would cause so much upset!

You can get day tickets for Sandbeck from Malyby News, it's on the north side of queens corner in maltby ( the main crossroads) £4.00 each, the shop opens quite early, about 6.00am i think. directions are: head out of maltby down tickhill rd. & after about 2 miles you go up a bit of a hill, SLOW DOWN as the turnoff is on your right at quite an obscure bend, follow this road across the little crossroads & straight ahead past the houses for nearly a mile until you see a turnoff on the right - again, GO SLOW as it's easy to miss, you should see a sign saying it's private land but don't worry, follow the road round until you can turn off right going down the hill, you are there. i have to say the perch are my faves & if you fish off either end of the wooden decking you're on to a winner (watch the snag under the tree at the eastern end) but also i've been told if you fish right down next to the decking you can catch some big ones. watch out for the tench & carp when fishing off the decking as they can easily snap you off but if it's bream or tench you're after fishing a feeder out in the middle works best. maggot & worm for the perch or halibut pellet/sweetcorn on the method/groundbait feeder for the bream & tench. hope that helps & hope to hear about the dearne & the don at Denaby soon.

glad to hear your removing pike vid big pat on the back for that.

On a humerous note No one has commented on the Afghan using a shoulder mounted missile launcher to blast the hell out of a lake for one fish ha hah.

We have had a little bit of rain over night so I may leave the Don and the Dearne till Thursday now.
It should add a bit of colour and a touch of depth to the Dearne which from past experience always seems to make for a better day there.

Gonna have a ride out to Sandbeck today I think to give it once over.
Thanks for the tips.

ello,
farmer's lakes near brandesburton is good for pike and big perch and roach. it's not fished that often so it can be a challenge to get pike out but it's all fun. i fish matches up there every couple of weeks and there are some big fish in there. only cost 3 pound (if the women comes round). look for the dakre lakeside park on the way to brandesburton.
mackeral and roach work well

Daz I went to have ascout around Sandbeck.......

looks like one of those places you read about but never find sshhhh think am gonna give it a bash.

You recommended the use of halibut pellet but am afraid if the sign that is up are current terms then pellet is not allowed. I took a few piccys while I was there and I will see if I can upload them.

Will probably be off to Don and Dearne with a bit of look tomorrow.

nice pics of sandbeck, Pete. and it is one of those places not many people know about (unless they are from maltby like me!) most of the time i'm down there i'm the only angler on the lake and it's nice & peaceful out in the middle of nowhere (it's on lord scarborough's estate) i'm not sure if pellets are still banned as i've seen a few people fishing with them but then i've only ever seen a bailiff once & that was about 3 years ago but corn is just as good anyway. you'll have to keep us posted how you get on fishing there.

Joe, where is brandesburton, i've never heard of it, what part of yorkshire is it in? i am in to my big perch fishing & just getting in to piking so it sounds good. what other species are there aswell?

Had a day at Sandbeck

called at newsagents in Maltby and spoke to a lovely lady who told me a little bit about Sandbeck and another one near Maltby pit I think she said it was called smithies pond or farmers pond....cant remember...do you know of it daz?

Thought my luck was in when I arrived at Sandbeck cos tucked up next to gate was a driving instructors car!!!

Thought gonna find a couple in this car in this remote field having a bit of LURV

no such bloody luck..and from then on it went down hill ha ha

Am not quite as light as I used to be and walking on the decking on the near side of the lake is rather bloody nerve wrecking to say the least.

Anyway managed to get to peg 30 at end.
Set up and cast in.
Made up a bit o special stuff for feeder and while I was kneeling down I managed to get my long reach curved forceps that I have clamped to my jacket stuck between grooves in decking which then pulled off and sank under boards.

There they lay glistening two feet outta reach. So cunning plan...get landing net and get them

ha ha just managed to push them into mud and released the biggest stink of rotten mud and dying vegetation.
phew whatta a lovely odour

Sod the forceps and back to my rod..
Not a touch not a sniff not a twitch

Move along decking start again
Not a touch not a sniff not a twitch

Move along decking start again
Not a touch not a sniff not a twitch

Move along decking start again
Not a touch not a sniff not a twitch

Move along decking start again
Not a touch not a sniff not a twitch

Stunning scenery fantastic wildlife
herons, young greebes
shit rat eating my special...where did that come from!!

Massive carp tries to head butt the clouds five times never seen anything like it.

Came back empty net, empty bait box, less £4 quid for day ticket but...
Going back for some more torture soon..what a stunning venue for relaxing.

Cheers Daz thanks for the pog (venue)

too bad u caught nowt pete, but it is that time of year when the stillwaters start slowing down & it's time to tackle the rivers, maybe better luck next time. had to chuckle reading about the forceps & the rat!? that wire on the decking can be a bugger for getting hooks/floats etc tangled in but i suppose it's better than it being a slippery death trap when it rains. btw what were you using for bait/tackle etc?

Smithies is the next turnoff right after you go past maltby colliery (just over the humpback bridge) i have lost a few huge carp there and i have just about give up with the place. it's brilliant for roach & skimmers but the problem is when you get a big fish on. you see, the bottom is full of big rocks & snags & with it being only a few feet deep (you can wade across most of it in chest waders, apparently) the carp & tench tend to hug the bottom, grating your line over the rocks & snapping you off (i have a 100% success rate of getting snapped while playing carp!!) so fishing near the dam wall is reccomended just incase you get a bug un as it's deeper there.

by all means give it a go or pop by the next time you are on your way to sandbeck because as i said there are some huge carp in there but you have been warned!!

i've not fished sandbeck for a month or 2 but there is some quality fishing to be had in the summer. it's one of those special places, full of wildlife & far enough away from civilisation to relax & enjoy the peace & quiet. i suppose that's why they have so many rules, so they can keep it that way!

i might go fishing on my club pond tomorrow, it's usually easy fishing, even at this time of year but i took a walk down a couple of days ago & the water was so clear i could see the bottom in most parts & i've never seen the bottom before! i'll let you all know how i get on.

Hiya DAZ, just seen your group heading and thought "WHY NOT" I live in LEEDS and fish 2 areas. 1) Leeds/Liverpool Canal, some nice fish but as u may know BOATS are the big offput to the area. 2) NONGOBYE FARM FISHERIES. on OTLEY OLD ROAD, Between Leeds and Otley. opposite the St. Helenas carravan site. 3 Lakes with approx 100 pegs, that are well looked after, and easily accessable for disabled on LOWER LAKE, most fish avail. Carp upto 15 or 20lb been caught this year, but have not heard of any PIKE in any of the Lakes. Ground Bait and Keepnets are not allowed, Corned Beef and Corn are very much favourite. £5 for a day ticket, toilets available bit also lots of trees and bushes, ROSY and Family who own the property are very easy to get along with and there could soon be a small tacke shop for the forgotten small items, If I had the money I would have been set up ready for post xmas trade. hope to see u and other group members some time. KEV.

Hi Daz,
I've just re-started fishin again, Was just wondering were you got tickets from for Sandbeck/Smithies it used to be fat graham down next to gillian banks dance place, but i've not been for at least 13yrs now as i moved away with work nmy brother edmo still lives in the village though. The Big Lake behind Sandbeck hall is a cracking lake to fish on, which has a good few 50pounders in it. Also the ponds next to smithies has some good fish in as well my mate ash used to live in the big house next too em.

Hi Mark

I bought my day ticket from MG News in Maltby think thats the only place. If you look at the photos I posted above it gives you address and restrictions for fishing.
