piking advice

i really wanna give piking ago but need to no some of the basics, like what rod to use (would a carp rod work?) bait, rigs, hooks, where are pike most likly to be, would be great if some you guys could help, cheers

Hi Mr Ink,
Yes a carp rod would be OK for starters. In brief you need line of 12 -15 lbs bs mono or 30 - 50 lbs braid. A wire trace of at least 18 inches is essential. An un hooking mat, a good sized landing net & forceps of around 12" in length. Bait, well mackerel, smelt, herring etc. all available from your local tackle shop but don't forget spratts, a most under-rated bait!

Hi mr ink.
Unhooking can be a tricky (and indeed a frightening) process for the beginner, so it would be sound advice to go with a fishing partner who has some experience with unhooking, watch closely and you can learn a lot from them before venturing out on your own.
Don't go down the route of one of those spring gag contraptions, as they are (in my experience) not ideal for the job-as a decent pike can close the spring no probs...far better is to use a good quality glove for unhooking, this method should be detailed on the pac web pages.best advice i can give with a pike on your mat,is to be CONFIDENT
