I use to buy crushed hemp seed (which was dry) and use it with ground bait for feeder fishing. The shop now only sells hemp seed, which i have been told needs to be prepared.
Can anyone tell me if i can just buy the seed and grind it down fine enough to use for feeder fishing or ground bait, or do i have to cook it. In which case how do i dry it out so that i can keep it in air tight tubs till needed?

Biggest problem is that when dry, hemp floats. You could do it if you cooked it, crushed it then put it back into its juices until you use it. Hope that makes sense. Its the only way i can think of doing it without the hemp floating

Hi Morph

the crushed hemp i keep in 2ltr air tight tubs, then when needed in mix it 1/4 hemp, 1/4 bread flake,1/4ground bait mix 1/4 trout pellets, then at lake side i add a tin of sweet corn juice and all. So the mix is slightly damp, then using a feeder when i cast out i can see the bubbles rising where trhe hemp is fizzing but doesn't float to surface. this is a good mix to use in the summer for bream and carp. I keep it fairly dry then the feeder explodes into a cloud on the bottom. But if i used hemp SEEDS that has been cooked it all just sits on the bottom in a big pile. So was wondering if i put seeds into blender and blitz it to crushed hemp would this be ok for fish to feed on, or does it HAVE to be cooked.

Yeah you can crush it yourself, but fairly difficult (a mate used to buy 20kg and use a clean cement mixer with a brick chucked in ! worked well ) or you can cook the seeds first by boiling in an old saucepan for about 20 mins (stinks) or until the seed splits & reveals the white seed kernel. Or buy it already crushed from elsewhere...... cheers

Not only sensas!
I was at The Big One yesterday and the bait warehouse had big bags of ground just about everything, including ground hemp! Here's the link for you:

It will just float to the surface...unless you have soaked it and cooked it.
