The Hampshire Avon is one of the best rivers in the country for chub and Barbel, the Frome is in Hants too I think, live no where near Hampshire but I would assume that standard chub river tactics will catch you chub down there

The hampshire avon is one of the best rivers by miles, however, you must get to know the stretch which you are going to fish before fishing. The fish arent as densley stocked as in some rivers, and you can fish a swim with no fish in it for hours. Id suggest walking the stretch and putting some bait in a few swims, and then just watching for fish, even if you cant see any, at least you've got to know a few swims.

hi
well i have fished the Dorset Stour (Throop fisheries) which is only a stones throw away from you. Some very nice Chub and barbel in there, i've had an 11Ib Barbel and a 6Ib chub on only my 2nd trip down there and my mate had one of 7,2 and i think it was 8 pound a day

hi john where abouts in hampshire do you live,im a hampshire lad myself, when it comes to chubb and barbel in hampshire you have got some of the best rivers in england on your doorstep ,the itchen, avon, stour.and many more but if you want some proper chubbing then the river test is the place at timsbury manor just by romsey you will blow your 3lb chubb clean out the water and theres a good chance of an 8lber and it is perfect for your centrepin all the best.

Hi Terry

I live in portsmouth, I have tried the Itchen and the stour and still have not caught chub, I have caught plenty of roach on the Itchen and only managed perch on the stour. On both rivers I have tried chub tactics without luck,so I guess its just a case of trying to improve my methods and tactics. I have thought about timsbury but have been told day tickets are very expensive.

Timsbury is £18 for daylight hours only, at the moment I have been reliably told the ticket covers you from 9am - 3pm, so it is quite expensive

it is a bit steep but then they only allow about ten anglers on the banks a day, and its a world famous stretch of river so i suppose you gotta pay for that.you wont be dissapointed though.on the private stretch of the itchen its £20 a day

Im from gosport, and we regularly go to the itchen in southampton, theres a free stretch by the white swan pub and resturant(just up from the mill),the key is to walk up river and round to the other side and fish right behind the pub, trotting with maggots Ive had many running to 4lb.8oz and a friend had plenty to 5lb plus(chub). Its been a bit slow lately, but we`ve still been pulling plenty of pike out.Not bad for free, get yourself back down there! N.B dont take too many pals as theres just room for two, threes pushing it.Gotta go,im off down the itchen, nah seriously,I am.

Hi Bob, fished the Itchen a number of times, never really tried ledgering for the chub as the flow is so strong, Ive always trotted as I love fishing the centrepin, always caught plenty of nice roach, but no big chub, only little fingerlings, perhaps Im fishing in the wrong areas or Im just there on the off days.

Yeah like I said,I went down earlier for a few hours, couldnt really see much fish wise,it was well coloured, and I cant believe I didnt have a take from a little jack.Im pretty new to rivers,so at the minute im having hit n miss sessions myself, but that swim behind the White swan is definately worth taking a look at.In the warmer months you can see big chub taking nobbies nuts off the people in the beer garden, awsome.

Dont know for definate, but you may want to check about the opposite bank, behind pub etc, im pretty sure opposite bank is a club leased stretch, strange I know seeing as 1 bank is free fishing, but thats what I have been told.
Im new to rivers myself, fished the itchen for about 2 years know, but not that often if you know what I mean. As I belong to Ports and District AC I tend to fish closer to home.
But yeah I will be spending more time at mansbridge, there are some big pike in there and the roach and go 2lb down in the park stretches.
